Marea voluptate a singurătăţii. Libertate la apogeu. Privilegiul rar de a fi intim cu tine însuţi şi sincer cu intimitatea ta. Singurătatea te situează, dintr-odată, de cealaltă parte a universului, într-un perfect echilibru cu el, într-o cumpănă desăvîrşită, ca aceea dintre mare şi cer la Messembria... Singurătatea nu încurajează nici un compromis. Şi totuşi, nimic nu e mai monstruos decît singurătatea trăită fără vocaţia singurătăţii. Tot astfel cum nimic nu e mai ridicol decît să te obligi la viaţă publică atunci cînd eşti născut pentru singurătate.
